How to save money on a move when you need storage
A move has a lot of one-time costs. Storage is different. If you need a unit between homes, it is often the cost that keeps running after the move is done. A few choices up front can keep that monthly bill lower.
Right-size the unit
Declutter before you move. Sell, donate or toss what you will not use in your next home. Then measure what is left, or list your large items, and pick the smallest unit that fits. A bigger unit than you need means paying every month for empty space.
Compare rates within about 3 miles and read the fees
Look at a few facilities within about 3 miles of where you want your things. Compare more than the monthly rate. Ask about:
- Admin or move-in fees
- Required insurance or protection plans
- Lock requirements and what a lock costs
- Promo rates, and what the regular rate will be after the promo ends
The lowest first month is not always the lowest total cost.
Plan for rate increases
Storage rates can go up after you move in. If you get a notice, read what to do when a price goes up. To see what a unit really costs over time, work out the true yearly cost of a storage unit.
Ask for a better rate in writing
Before you sign, and later while you rent, you can ask the facility whether a lower rate is available. Keep it short and polite, and ask in writing so you have a record of what they said. A lower rate is not guaranteed, but it is worth asking. For more tips, read how to negotiate storage unit rent.
Other move costs worth trimming
Moving is also a good time to review your other monthly bills, like internet, phone and insurance at your new address. Our guide to recurring bills you can ask to lower has general tips. This is information only: Cut My Storage does not handle those bills.
