Recurring bills you can ask to lower

Some monthly bills are not fixed. For many of them, you can ask the company for a lower rate, a smaller plan, or a current offer. This guide is general information you can use on your own bills. Cut My Storage only helps with one of them: self storage.

Internet and phone

Look at your latest bill and note what you pay and what is included. Check the plans the same company offers today and what other providers in your area charge. Then ask in writing whether they can offer a lower rate or a plan that fits how you actually use it.

Insurance

Review what your policy covers and what you pay. You can ask your insurer whether there is a lower-cost option, or compare quotes from other companies. Make sure any change still gives you the coverage you need.

Subscriptions

List the apps, streaming services and memberships you pay for. Cancel the ones you do not use, and look for cheaper plans on the ones you keep. If a price just went up, our guide on what to do when a price goes up walks through the steps.

Storage unit rent

Storage rent is a recurring bill that many people never question. Start by working out the true yearly cost of a storage unit, then read how to negotiate storage unit rent.

A short, polite written ask

You can adapt this email for any provider:

"Hi, I have been a customer for [time]. My bill is now [amount] a month. Can you offer me a lower rate or a plan that costs less? Thank you, [your name]"

A written ask gives you a record of what they said.

Check your next bill

If they agree to a change, check your next bill to make sure it shows the new rate. Keep their reply with your records.
