A bill went up. Here is what you can do

A price increase notice is easy to skim and pay. Whether it is your rent, a streaming plan, or your storage unit, a few simple steps can help you decide what to do next. This guide is general information you can use on any recurring bill. Cut My Storage only helps with one of them: self storage.

Read the notice and the date it starts

Find the new price, the old price, and the date the change starts. Check whether the notice came by email, mail, or in an app, and keep a copy. For storage, our page on the storage rent increase notice explains what to look for.

Work out what the increase costs you over a year

Multiply the difference by the number of months the new price applies in the next 12 months. A small monthly change can look different over 12 months. For a storage unit, our guide to the true yearly cost of a storage unit has a simple worksheet.

Compare current plans and prices

Look at what the same provider offers today, including smaller plans or plans without extras you do not use. Then check what other providers charge for something similar. Write down the options you would actually consider.

Ask for a lower rate in writing

Many companies have a way to contact them by email, chat, or a written form. Keep your message short and polite: say how long you have been a customer, mention the new price, and ask what rate they can offer. A written ask gives you a record of what they said.

Decide: keep, downgrade, or cancel

Once you have their answer and your comparison, choose what fits your budget. Before you cancel anything, check your agreement for notice periods or fees. If you are unsure about your rights under a lease or contract, talk to a qualified professional.
