Life Storage Rate Increase: What to Check Now
If you rent at a Life Storage location and got a rate increase notice, you may wonder who you are dealing with now. Life Storage merged with Extra Space in 2023. Here is what that means, what to check in your notice, and how to ask for a lower rate.
Life Storage is now part of Extra Space
Extra Space Storage and Life Storage announced the closing of their merger on July 20, 2023 (Extra Space press release). Per Extra Space's SEC filing, Life Storage became a wholly owned subsidiary of Extra Space, and each Life Storage share was converted into 0.895 of an Extra Space share (Form 8-K). Extra Space said it operates under the Extra Space, Life Storage and Storage Express brands. As of Oct 22, 2026, lifestorage.com redirects to extraspace.com.
Why your rate went up (check agreement and notice)
Your rental agreement sets how your rate can change and how you are told. Your notice should show the reason, if one is given. Read both before you respond. We don't know the reason for any specific increase, and the merger alone doesn't tell you why your rate changed.
What to check in your notice
- Your current rate and your new rate
- The date the new rate starts
- Whether a promo or intro rate ended
- Fees or add-ons (like a protection plan) listed separately from rent
- How the facility asks you to respond
How to ask for a lower rate
- Reply to the facility in writing and ask if a lower rate is available.
- Compare written offers from nearby facilities.
- Keep copies of every notice and reply.
